The majority of the Memelers prefers Sandkrug, a green gem on the sand of the Curonian spit, quarter-hourly reachable by spacious ferry ships, less than ten minutes from the city. The spa's capacity for permanent guests was limited, in the neat Spa Hotel by the lagoon, in the Historical Sandkrug or in the Villa Einars. Instead on sundays the ferries unloaded here thousands of people. Sandkrug lured a large circle of friends in all seasons even in winter who enjoyed the broad beach, the extensive woods and the established paths. At the beginning of the 19th century the area around the Old Sandkrug just consisted of a sandy wasteland which only had a trace of green on the lagoon beach. The in 1616 first mentioned edifice, which probably was already considerably older is the jug on a fifteen meters high dune hilltop at the lagoon -- the last stop for postriders, messengers and travellers before going across the lagoon. 1836 the merchant guild of Memel which showed a praiseworthy public spirit at the reafforestation of Memel's surroundings, got the nib of the Curonian spit to the planting transferred. At the lagoon edge the first villas grew concurrently with the forest. The Old Sandkrug became greenly. At the lagoon the spa gardens' trees cambered themselves.
