The Walk to the Lighthouse.

By pedestrians the lighthouse was reachable from the center of the town within approximately 45 minutes.

"Starting at the city hall you walk through the "Luisenstrasse" and the "Holzstrasse". Continue along the tram line beside the port, and you will reach the "Schlewiesstrasse" with its nautical-Dutch appearance soon. In the late summer the lamprey flag of the smokehouse "Suhr" announces that lampreys (a specialty of Memel) are roasted, and ready to be served with a bottle of Port or wine. You will pass by the fishing port, whose shore is serving as a fish-market once the fisher-boats have arrived. From the left side the "Memeler Tief" and the Curonian lagoon is saluting. Above it the dark green ramparts of the "Nehrungsfort" with the semaphore on it. On the right of the road the tiled roofs of the fishing village "Bommelsvitte" are shining over. Between the "Präparandenanstalt" (formerly navigation school) and the time-honored rescue shack one sees the enormous marker buoys which give the seamen and fishermen direction and hints for the entry into the fairway. Then appears the forest, the plantation, and the lighthouse waves a yellow or red flag above the storm proven treetops of the dark Scots pines."
Führer durch Memel und Umgebung - 1913

For thirty years one could reach the lighthouse also by tram. After the "Memeler Straßenbahn" had been shut down in 1934, busses of the "Memeler Kleinbahn AG" used the former tram routes until the beginning of the 2nd World War.
